The Expo Buses Featuring “Zero Emission” Will Continue to Serve Shanghai after the Expo Back List >December 2010

It is learnt that a super-capacitor bus of type SWB6121SC, which is identical to those that run the Expo Boulevard Line, has been involved in the field test for several months at Kowloon, Hong Kong. Upon successful completion of the field test, the buses of such type will be officially recommended for extensive services along the bus lines run by Kowloon Motor Bus.

Moreover, the 61 super-capacitor buses that are being used in the Expo Site will probably be put into operations of bus Lines 11 and 26 etc. respectively after closure of the Expo. And the  pure fuel cell buses that are being used on both the Expo Boulevard Cross-River Line and GuoZhan Line will hopefully be put into operations of Line 20 running along the Nanjing Road after retrofit.

Safe Operation of up to 640,000 km in 4 Months
The Sun-Win brand super-capacitor buses that boast to have realized “Zero Emission” have been right under the limelight ever since the opening of the Expo Site. Pollution-free emission, enhanced mobility compared with traditional trolley bus and removal of the trolley bus cables densely crossed overhead like spider webs which are detrimental to the urban appearance... all these advantages contribute to the convincing new direction of development of the trolley bus industry in Shanghai, which had been suspended for years.
Based on the practical operations for over 4 months serving the Expo Boulevard Line, the 61 super-capacitor buses operated by the Bus Group have run over 640,000 kilometers, served accumulatively over 188,000 shifts and carried nearly 20 million passengers.
During that period of time, they’ve experienced such multiple challenges as super large passenger flow of over half a million people having emerged for several times, the bad weather featuring continuous extremely high temperature, and multiple thunderstorms and windstorms etc.

Successful Test of Charged Operation at Kowloon
A brand-new technology is attracting extensive concerns from quite a number of countries and regions, as it has attained so remarkable achievement in a short period of time. In particular, the Hong Kong Government Delegation was so much fascinated by the super-capacitor buses running along the Expo Boulevard during their Shanghai Expo tour.
Before long, the Hong Kong Government decided that the field test with such buses would be carried out at Kowloon Bus in Hong Kong and upon successful completion of the field test, the buses of such type will be further recommended for extensive services along the bus lines run by Kowloon Motor Bus.
When the installation and commissioning of the power-supply equipment of the super-capacitor buses had been completed by the technicians from Shanghai during an earlier trip to Hong Kong, a super-capacitor bus of type SWB6121SC manufactured by Shanghai Sun Win was delivered through the customs to Hong Kong for initial test of charged operation, which was completed successfully. Kowloon Bus Motor was very satisfied with the test results.
It is learnt that the super-capacitor bus sent to Hong Kong for field test has utilized a single-unit charging system, which has been applied to the field of charging electric bus the first time ever and realized the diversified power supply modes for super-capacitor bus.
The whole course of test will last for a couple of months, with the super-capacitor bus’s performance under the worst Hong Kong weather to be tested and appraised in detail. If everything runs smoothly, the Sun-Win super-capacitor buses will be officially appearing at Kowloon, delivering bus service.

Be Expected to Complement the Existing Bus Lines in Shanghai
Among the buses featuring “Zero Emission” that serve the Shanghai Expo, in addition to the super-capacitor buses that are chargeable through “plait”, the current collectors as nicknamed, there are “plaitless” pure fuel cell buses of types of SWB6121EV and SWB6121EV2, which serve both the Expo Boulevard Cross-River and GuoZhan Lines. As the Expo will close in less than 2 months, “where to drive” turns out to be a hotly debated issue among local citizens about these buses.
The journalist has learnt from the Expo Site bus line manager that the two types of the buses featuring “Zero Emission” will most probably be applied to complement part of the existing bus lines in Shanghai. Hopefully, the super-capacitor buses will be put into operations of Line 11, 26 and 931.

Of the three lines, Line 11 has already been updated completely with the super-capacitor buses, with the Expo buses to be accepted for supplementary service capabilities. The stops along the route of Line 26 had been completed with the installation of charging supports even prior to the Expo, so that the buses may run the route directly as soon as they are put into this line. With regards to Line 931, given the considerable length of this line and other factors involving the installation of charging supports etc., how to use the super-capacitor buses on this line remains to be an open issue. Another type of pure fuel cell buses may be put into operation on Line 20, the trolley bus line boasting the longest history in Shanghai.
